The fifth volume of the Registers of the Diocese of Hereford, now completed, contains the Registers of Bromfield, Greete, Bedstone, Middleton Scriven, Deuxhill and Glazeley, Habberley, Cardeston, and Ratlinghope.
In the present volume, as has been the rule adopted by the Council throughout, the Registers are not printed in full, but in an abbreviated form vi'hich can readily be understood, though every salient fact has been recorded, and all occurrences, remark- able events, etc., have been given in full.
The following abbreviations have been adopted : —

The value of the Greete and Cardeston Registers is increased by the addition of the Transcripts of the earlier lost Registers from the bundles preserved at Hereford.

BromfieI& IRegisters.
Bromfield is a parish about three miles north-west from Ludlow, in the diocese of Hereford, archdeaconry and rural deanery of Ludlow, and hundred of Munslow. Its area is 6232 acres, and the population in 1891 was 546, and in 1901, 625. In 1676 the population must have been larger than it is now, for there were 300 conformists and 8 papists in Bromfield, above the age of sixteen, and no nonconformists. Lord Windsor is the lord of the manor of Bromfield, the principal landowner, and patron of the living.
The Parish Register Abstract, 1831, gives this account of the Bromfield Registers: — "Bromfield V. No. I., Register 1559 — 1617, defective, trans- cribed in part to No. II., 1559 — 1685. No. III., 1691 — 1731. No. IV., (Parchment) 1732 — 1812. Nos. V. and VI., Banns, 1755— 1812; marr., 1807 — 1812.
This is not quite accurate. All the volumes of Register except No. I. are of parchment ; Nos. I. and II. are each of them transcripts, made apparently, in 1603 or thereabouts, of not quite the same series of entries, and whereas No. I. begins "A true coppy of the Register Booke," etc., No. II. is headed " A true Register," ete. The latter has accordingly been taken as the text to be transcribed, the variations presented by No. I. in the period 1559 — 1601 and 1615— 1617, being noted at the foot of the page. These last entries appear to be of the nature of rough notes, which however furnish some information not perpetuated in the completed entry.
No. V. contains not only Banns, but the marriages from 1755 — 1806.
The only gaps in the register are : — July 4th, 1667 — October 8th, 1669, and February 20th, 1685 — April 12th, 1691. In the first case the register has not been kept, but two pages are left blank, with a note by John Slade, (inducted October 8th, 1669), that " this space was left unfilled by Mr. Maurice." The second gap occurs at the end of No. III.; the register appears to have been kept, but not in any book that remains; some of the missing years have been supplied from the Diocesan Transcripts at Hereford, and are distinguished by square brackets.
Henry Maurice, referred to above, and Vicar 1661 — 1669, was in some respects the most notable of the Vicars of Bromfield. A man of strong Puritan opinions, he nevertheless "conformed" at Bromfield in 1662, but afterwards falling into bad health, and his conscience troubling him for this matter, he resigned the living and retired to Church Stretton. (See Calamy's Nonconformist's Memorial, vol. III., pp. 159 — 162.)
Entries of special interest in the Registers are : —
1632, March 22. "A hcence to eat flesh" granted to Sir Charles Foxe (who died in November, 1634).
Bromfield Registers.
1646. "About the midd. of May nine Souldiers were buried." These were doubtless the bodies of men killed in the fighting round Ludlow, which resulted in the capture of that place by the Parliamentary forces in May of this year.
1655. " An intent of marriage published three severall Lord's Dales " ; presumably a Puritan substitute for banns.
A remarkable feature of the Register is the extraordinary number of "foreign" marriages, i.e., in which neither party was a parishioner, celebrated during the years 1718 — 1746, during the incumbency of Frederick Cornewall. This is especially marked during the latter part of this period, the year 1743 containing as many as 42 of these marriages, whereas the ordinary yearly average is only 3 or 4. There seems to have been some special attraction at this time about Bromfield, or perhaps its Vicar, since we find that these foreign marriages cease at once after Mr. Cornewall's death.

The following forms part of some notes read at a recent visit of the Cambrian Archaeological Association, and printed in Archaologia Camhrensis April, 1899 : —
"The Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Bromfield, was of importance in very early times, being mentioned in Domesday Book, as endowed with lands in Bromfield and elsewhere, though the entries are confused with those relating to St. Mary's, Shrewsbury. Here was a college of twelve canons secular, who in 11 55 affiliated themselves to the great Benedictine Monastery of St. Peter's Gloucester; and henceforward Bromfield, as a cell of this house, ceases to have any separate existence, until the time of the Dissolution, when, in 1538, it came into the King's hands. In 1557 it was granted to Charles Foxe of Ludlow, who pulled down the monastic buildings and erected a house for himself on the south side of the church, including in it the present chancel, which was the monks' choir, the nave serving as the parish church. This house was burnt down about the middle of the seventeenth century, when the then owner, Richard Herbert, removed to Oakly Park and restored the chancel to its original use re-roofing it in 1658, the present coved ceiling being added, or at least decorated, in 1672. The church underwent a partial restoration in 1844, and in 1890 was restored in a most satisfactory manner under the direction of Mr. C. Hodgson Fowler, F.S.A., and mainly at the cost of the patron. Lord Windsor. During this work, the plaster ceiling was removed from the nave, open oak seats substituted for the pews, and organ-chamber and vestry added, the north wall of the aisle re-built, and two fresh windows inserted in the south wall of the chancel, and a new west window inserted.
The church at present consists of a nave, chancel, north aisle, and north-west tower ; but that it was originally of larger extent is evidenced by the Norman arch now blocked up in the east wall, and another opening into the present organ-chamber. These show us that the original church was probably cruciform, with the chancel lying to the east of the present, and a north transept on the ground now occupied by the organ-chamber. Whether there was a south transept and tower at the crossing is uncertain, though probable. The nave extended probably as far west as at present, as there are remains of a Norman window in the north wall, where the east wall of the tower abuts against it. This tower dates from early in the thirteenth century, with a small addition to its height of late Decorated date, and is a very massive and good specimen of Early English architecture. The lower portion serves as a porch, and has a plain and very large arch on its outer face, and a smaller and more ornate doorway leading into the church. About the time of the erection of the tower, the chancel and north transept appear to have either fallen or been taken down, doubtless owing to the foundations being rendered insecure by the river Onny, which flows close under this part. The monks then built up the arches opening into chancel and transept, inserting a piscina in the

filling of the former, and established their choir in the space of the old crossing. To compensate possibly for the loss of space thus occasioned in the nave (the parishioners' part), the north aisle was added, c. 1260. The arcade separating it from the nave, though only of two bays, is of remarkably good effect from the boldness and just proportions of its details.
In 1658, as already stated, the choir was restored to the church, and a new roof was put on, ornamented similarly to the nave with shields of arms recording the alliances, etc., of the Herberts. Fourteen years later, the present wonderful ceiling was put up, which has been described as " the best specimen of the worst period of ecclesiastical art." The painter, T. Francis, who has signed and dated his work, received £"] for doing this, and otherwise decorating the chancel. From 1658 also probably dates the east window, now blocked, which presents an interesting and peculiar instance of seventeenth-century Gothic. A relic of the secular occupation of this part of the church is to be seen in the window above, an ordinary three-light domestic window of sixteenth- or seventeenth-century date.
The font is a plain bowl with necking below, apparently of the fourteenth century.
During the 1890 restoration various fragments of interest were found, including a Norman standing piscina, now set up close to the vestry-door, and a slab with rudely-formed cross in relief, which may have formed part of the tympanum of an early Norman door.
Of the monastic buildings, the only remains are the gate-house, a building of uncertain date, the lower part of stone, the upper of timber ; and the Abbey Mill, on the opposite side of the Teme, near the bridge leading to Oakly Park."

The Register is kept in English throughout, and contains no single illegible entry. It has been transcribed by the Rev. W. G. Clark-Maxwell, F.S.A., who has also collated the proof-sheets, as they passed through the press, with the assistance of the Rev. Prebendary Selwyn, the present Vicar. Lord "Windsor, President of the Society, has most generously paid the expense of printing the Register and the Index.
